Developers can write an application in today’s environments without a care about the hardware used and with virtually no regard to the underlying operating system. Time will tell whether this will render the platform wars irrelevant.

One of the interesting trends over the last decade or so is that less and less code (as a percentage of overall code written) is being written as code that gets compiled to native code. Instead, we are seeing a continued interest in various interpreted/dynamic languages (PHP, Ruby, SQL, and JavaScript), bytecode interpreter environments (the Java Virtual Machine and the .NET CLR), and now, Rich Internet Application (RIA) systems (Adobe AIR, Silverlight, etc.).
